About the Course
These 5 bitesize sessions aims to provide you with a quick glimpse into the exciting field of shipping law.
In the first module, we will provide a brief explanation of the Bill of Lading and its legal significance. This module is presented by Ms. Sitpah Selvaratnam, a consultant at Messrs Tommy Thomas, Kuala Lumpur and is moderated by Mr. Abdul Azim Abdul Razak, a legal practitioner at Messrs Rahmat Lim & Partners, Kuala Lumpur. He is also a member of the SALC.
In the second module, we will explain how a ship can be purchased. This module is presented by Ms. Wan Hilwanie Arif, a Managing Partner of Messrs Ariff & Co. and is moderated by Mr. Abdul Azim Abdul Razak.
In the third module, we will explain the role of insurers in shipping. This module is presented by Mr. Jeremy Joseph, a Managing Partner of Messrs Joseph & Partners and is moderated by Ms. Azri Nadiah, a legal practitioner at Messrs Azri and Associates, Kuala Lumpur. She is also a member of the SALC.
In the fourth module, we will explain when and why a ship can be arrested. This module is presented by Mr. Arun Krishnalingam, a senior partner in Messrs Sativale, Mathew and Arun and is moderated by Ms. Azri Nadiah.
In the fifth module, we will explain what happens when a ship is sold by the courts. This module is presented by Mr. Mathew Kurien, a senior partner in Messrs Sativale, Mathew and Arun and is moderated by Ms. Azri Nadiah.
Instructions

About the Presenters

Ms. Sitpah Selvaratnam
Sitpah Selvaratnam is a consultant at Messrs Tommy Thomas, Kuala Lumpur, practising for 30 years plus in over 100 shipping in remand persimmon actions including arrest of ships, charterparty, and cargo disputes, collision and shipyards claims. Disputes pertaining to international trade, documentary credit, marine insurance and damage at ports.
Ms. Wan Hilwanie Ariff
Wan Hilwanie Ariff is the Managing Partner of Messrs Ariff & Co. She specialises in corporate banking work, shipping, oil and ship financing, sales and purchase of vessels, shipbuilding contracts and other non-contentious shipping legal work. She is currently the President of the International Malaysia Law Society of Maritime Law.
Mr. Jeremy Joseph
Jeremy Joseph is the Managing Partner of Messrs Joseph & Partners. He advises clients on the full range of maritime, insurance and commercial law. He is a highly commended shipping lawyer and has consistently been featured as a leading lawyer by the LEGAL 500 and Chambers Asia for 11 consecutive years.
Mr. Arun Krishnalingam
Arun Krishnalingam is a senior partner in Messrs Sativale, Mathew and Arun and is a specialist in shipping and admiralty practice. He is an experienced shipping litigator and counsel who has been involved in significant shipping disputes. He obtained his law degree from the University of Nottingham and is a barrister at Inner Temple London.
Mr. Mathew Kurien
Mathew Kurien is a senior partner in Messrs Sativale, Mathew and Arun and is a specialist in shipping and admiralty practice. He obtained his law degree from the University of London and thereafter his certificate in legal practice in 1994 and Diploma in International Arbitration and Mediation. He has been involved in the annotation of the Malaysian High Court Practice on Admiralty Proceedings, is the author of Malaysia Court Forms on Shipping and Admiralty published by the Malaysian Law Journal (Butterworth) and Halsbury Laws of Malaysia in relation to admiralty practice.
